I joined the CLG organization exactly one year ago with the team CLG Black
That day was a big moment in my life. It felt as if I finally managed to break the competitive scene, which was no easy feat. Even before that, however, there is a story many people don’t know about that I would like to share
I did not play League of Legends for that long then. It had only been around 6-7months. I was just a guy who played ranked games that sniped people on streams for fun. I queued vs them and laned vs them in order to improve my skill. To play vs the “pros” was to test where I was at. I never liked losing and I never liked being bad. I was on a mission to simply become the best due to my competitive nature. As I played solo q, I met people and became friends with them. Hoodstomp was one of them. Me and him decided to make a team to play the game seriously. Yoda, a friend I met irl at school and someone who had a competitive history in HoN, became our jungler. Hoodstomp picked up Vech, the Lee Sin who got kicked in da ass by HotshotNidaleeGG at DreamHack, and LemonNation, some random support player who always wanted to play Nautilus support. Known as Hoodstompgravesgg at first, we were picked up by Orbit Gaming after playing numerous go4lols and beating teams like TheGreenForest and EZ Gaming. We were the original Orbit and many people still to this day don’t know that. It was during that era I made the Great Escape on Lee Sin. We played a fair amount of games including hitting rank 1 on ranked 5s. Scarra called us the “new and upcoming team”. Back then, I used to queue vs him all the time in order to improve my midplay (guilty). But our team had a lot of problems, unfortunately. A lot of games were being lost in scrims. Vech was playing from Singapore so he had constant ping issues plus he was going to join the army in 2 months (due to law). Hoodstomp was unhappy with the team and Yoda was underperforming. This was around the time when the announcement of a second CLG team arose. This team was to become the new scrim partners for them (which we did before Korea and before worlds).
As a CLG Fanboy, I could not help but get on the hype train. Deep down, I wanted to be a part of the CLG brand. Coupled with unsatisfaction with my team, I somehow found myself aiding the creation of the team. EZ Sycho Sid, [mtw] Gosu Zuna , oRb Hoodstomp, 4Not Bloodwater, and of course me were to be the new CLG Black. (I’m still not sure how we came up with the name Black…) This was a team I was incredibly happy with. We were all having fun while trying to win. Of course, when we lost we knew we tried our best. Always striving to be better and hipster, I theorycrafted a lot of different things during my time on the team. I still remember the game when we ran Udyr jungle, Yorick top, 3gp10 Madreds Bloodrazer rush Mid Ezreal to do a 15 minute baron. We ran a lot of different OP stuff including Skarner/Mordekaiser along with Orianna/Wukong. It was a fun period of time.
One of CLG Black’s biggest strengths was the ability to play almost anything. We picked purely to counter lane because our lack of experience enabled us to not properly end games. So we banked on half the time, just winning laning phase and creating a big enough advantage to win late. Well kinda. I say kinda because we also picked sometimes to just survive lane and win through our superior teamfight champions. A lot of my playstyle was influenced by Froggen at the time so afk farming and hitting 200 cs by 18 minutes with heroes like AP Kog, Anivia, Orianna was a staple to me.
I am not sure whether to say if this was the downfall of the team, but CLG Black never practiced. We all had some sort of issue. Sycho Sid had internet problems #comcast, Hoodstomp had family issues, me and Bloodwater had school. I guess Zuna was the only one that didn’t have an issue… well except him not playing soloq when we couldn’t practice. (He hated soloq LOL). Even though we didn’t practice, we still played and were a competitive threat. We played in GESL and got second to TSM (during their crazy win streak). Afterwards, we mainly played in NESL matches and some small tourneys like GGChronicles. Can I take this moment to say we are also responsible for the reason why iG did not go to ipl5… (oops ). Then again, iG was on 200 ping and were still a relatively new team. zz1tai was so fun to play vs…
CLG Black ultimately died when Hoodstomp retired. He got burned out of the game and we still managed to hold a 4man roster for quite a bit of time. We rotated countless number of subs that have recently made their name in LCS and played on a weekly basis. A lot of our scrims were played with a lot of… disadvantage. I couldn’t talk sometimes cause of no mic, Zuna was sick half the time, Bloodwater wouldn’t talk cause we didn’t talk… etc. A lot of problems occurred but we still stuck around for a while (despite people saying we had disbanded like 3 months earlier than we did..)
It was a rocky road… as well as writing this incohesive post (which I apologize for..), but it was a fun one. I’m happy to see my former teammates do well in LCS and I continue to hope they succeed. Their success is as important as mine as they are dear friends.
Thanks for being awesome teammates. You guys are seriously some of the coolest guys I’ve ever met. Shoutouts to you guys Chris/Lyub/Devon/Benny and of course Tim #1 Manager NA ^o^
